TEAM (1993 Baseball Team)
Coached by Jim Brady, the 1993 baseball team accomplished quite a bit during their historic season. Not only did they set a then-school record with 31 victories, but they also won a regional title and advanced to the NCAA Division II College World Series for the first time since 1977. In addition, they posted their 12th straight winning season, captured the MIAA South Division title and were ranked as high as eighth in the NCAA Division II national poll.
Â
Although the Rivermen had a solid offensive lineup, pitching was the primary key to their success. The team's 3.17 ERA ranked fifth nationally in Division II. Senior Andy Runzi (an UMSL Sports Hall of Famer) finished with a 9-2 record and a 2.15 ERA, while Greg Shepherd posted a then school record 11 saves, which also led the nation, and a 1.04 ERA. Runzi and Shepherd earned first and third team All-American honors, respectively, while Runzi was also named the MIAA and DII Central Region Pitcher of the Year.
Â
Senior outfielder Bob Mutnansky was also a first team All-American, leading the Rivermen in hitting (.363), home runs (11) and RBIs (47).
